December, 2012: Bill C-31
On December 15, 2012, new Canadian refugee legislation came into force. Journey Home Community is concerned about many of the provisions in this legislation. In particular, we believe that the law creates a two-tier system of refugee protection in Canada. We are also concerned that groups of refugee claimants will be judged together rather than on the individual merits of their claim; this creates the potential for prejudice in the refugee determination system. We are also concerned that tight time-lines (in some cases, 30 days after arrival) will not allow refugee claimants adequate time to prepare evidence for their hearing. For a summary of the new refugee legislation, please see the Canadian Council for Refugees website.
