Maria’s Story: From Desperation to Hope
Maria and her husband fled their home country in South America, seeking safety for their growing family. When they arrived at Journey Home Community, Maria was eight months pregnant. They were in desperate need of support, having spent the night in a park. With tears in her eyes, Maria shared their story and urgent need for help.
Thankfully, our Meanwhile Spaces program had availability, and they were soon settled into one of our transitional units. With the assistance of their Journey Home caseworker, Maria received essential health coverage just in time to welcome a beautiful baby girl.
Maria and her husband quickly became a valued part of our community, forming new friendships, and participating in dinners and classes.
A few months later, the family independently found and secured a rental unit, despite not speaking English. The landlord was delighted to assist them. On moving day, Maria again had tears in her eyes. But this time they were tears of joy and gratitude for the support her family received, the community they had become a part of and their new home.
This story is a testament to the impact of community and support in transforming lives.
